Reflecting on company values: do they truly matter?

Do you follow your company values?

Recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts. This is probably because I recently participated in an episode. Podcasts have become a powerful way to tell stories. They show how sharing ideas can spark innovation. However, that is a topic for another time.

Corporate culture in focus: Netflix’s unorthodox approach

I’ve been enjoying the second season of Land of The Giants. It examines Netflix’s rise and unique corporate culture. At Netflix, anyone can be replaced. Managers frequently ask themselves if someone else could do the job better. If the answer is yes, the person is replaced.

This might seem harsh. Nevertheless, Netflix pairs this approach with complete transparency. Employees have access to financial records and project reviews. As a result, they can defend themselves, even against their managers.

Netflix’s CEO, Reed Hastings, gave a strong example of why values matter. He recalled that Enron’s headquarters displayed “Integrity” as a core value. Despite this, the company collapsed because of fraud. Hastings argued that values must be practiced. Otherwise, they become meaningless. This story made me reflect on BY FOODS‘ values.

BY FOODS core values

Dedication
Dedication is at the top of our list, and for good reason. The pandemic challenged this value, yet our team thrived. Because we didn’t have commutes or rigid schedules, we stayed focused. From the beginning, dedication has guided us through challenges and successes.

Integrity
Integrity means keeping promises. For example, as Enron showed, values must be actions, not just words. By honoring our commitments, we build trust and strengthen our reputation.

Objectivity
Humility and realism help us stay grounded. We recognize our strengths, but we also admit our mistakes. Consequently, objectivity helps us avoid being overly optimistic or falling for empty promises.

Motivation
Motivation drives us forward. For instance, at our first trade shows in London, the positive reactions to our natas inspired us. Since then, that energy has pushed us to achieve more.

Will to Win
Resilience and determination define our mindset. This value reflects our commitment to overcoming challenges and always striving for success.

Passion
Passion underpins everything we do. Even when we had limited industry experience, our love for the craft kept us moving forward. Because of this passion, we have continued to grow.

Quality
Quality is non-negotiable. It captured attention at our first trade shows, and it still defines us today. If we ever compromise on quality, we risk losing what makes us special.

Thinking Outside the Box
Creativity leads to innovation. Whether refining recipes or exploring new markets, we rely on fresh ideas. As a result, we stand out in a competitive industry.

A living reflection of our culture
I am proud of these values. I believe my team truly lives by them. While some may seem overused, they genuinely reflect BY FOODS’ identity. New team members quickly embrace them, proving they are more than just words.

Unlike Enron’s empty values, but much like Netflix’s evolving approach, our values are not static. There is always room to improve. What about you? Do you live by your company values?

The Gulfood 2020 trade show has come and gone. We noticed a lot less footfall than previous editions – probably due to the Covid-19 scare – but nothing that would hamper our experience and potential business expectations.

The Gulfood trade show is one of the world’s leading events in the food and beverage industry. Held annually in Dubai, it gathers exhibitors and visitors from all corners of the globe. The event showcases innovations, highlights emerging trends, and creates countless networking and business opportunities. With its dynamic environment and international reach, Gulfood remains a key platform for industry professionals.

The Gulfood 2020 has wrapped up. Despite a noticeable decrease in footfall, likely due to the Covid-19 scare, the event delivered promising business opportunities.

The highlight of the show was our K-Jada. This sweet pastry, often overshadowed by its more famous sibling, the nata, stole the spotlight. Visitors in Dubai flocked to it, likening it to a refreshing oasis in the desert. Caramel was the favorite flavor, and it was thrilling to see K-Jada shine. The pastry’s sweetness resonated deeply with the Middle Eastern audience, who appreciate desserts like honeyed dates, baklava, almond fingers, and harissa. We even suspect the queijada and Knaffeh might be distant relatives!

Meanwhile, Nata Pura launched its new microwaveable line, Nata Pura MW, to great interest. This innovation promises to bring a new era of convenient, delicious treats, starting in the Middle East.

In less positive news, the Foodex trade show in Tokyo has been canceled due to health concerns. We hoped we would surf out the wave of enthusiasm shown at Gulfood for the K-Jada right into March, but it turns out SIAL Canada will be our next host, instead!
